Find a FieldScope Project
Many FieldScope projects are open to participation from across North America and even internationally. Topics that projects are investigating include water quality, plant life cycle phenology, night sky pollution, and more. FieldScope projects that are open to the public are listed on the FieldScope website here and include:
National/International Projects
Project Name |
Type |
Scope |
Plant monitoring |
Budburst brings together researchers, educators, gardeners, and citizen scientists on a shared journey to uncover the stories of plants and animals affected by human impacts on the environment. |
|
Species monitoring |
Get trained to listen to frogs and toad calls in your area to help us monitor local frog populations, rare and invasive species, and shifts in species diversity, range, and seasonal timing. |
|
Astronomical monitoring |
The Globe at Night program is an international citizen-science campaign to raise public awareness of the impact of light pollution by inviting citizen-scientists to measure their night sky brightness and submit their observations from a computer or smartphone. |
|
Soil monitoring |
Learn how to collect soil testing data using EPA procedures & protocols and how to advocate for your environment & health. Join a nationwide citizen science project to determine soil safety & health. |
Regional Projects
Project Name |
Type |
Scope |
Water quality monitoring |
Contribute, explore, and analyze water quality data across the Chesapeake Bay watershed region. |
|
Plant monitoring |
The Appalachian Laboratory and The American Chestnut Foundation are working with western Maryland residents to “crack the code” to re-establish American chestnut trees. |
|
Invasive species monitoring |
Participants are trained to identify invasive flora at established EwA sites and monitor the occurrence, abundance, coverage, and seasonal timing of problem species. |
|
Water quality monitoring |
The Great Lakes project invites participants to explore maps and graphs and contribute water quality data from across the Great Lakes watershed region, including parts of the United States and Canada. |
|
Multiple |
Great Smoky Mountains National Park has many participatory science projects that interested individuals or groups can contribute to, including Lichen Monitoring, Ozone Biomonitoring, Salamander Monitoring, Snail Monitoring, Terrestrial Invertebrate Monitoring, and Water Quality Monitoring. |
|
Water quality, fish, plankton, and benthos monitoring |
A project for educators - students spend time on a schooner, collect real data, and learn more about the basic ecology of the Great Lakes. |
|
Loko Ea Fish Pond Restoration (Hawaii) |
Species and water quality monitoring |
A community science project designed for schools and the moku to work alongside staff at the Mālama Loko Ea Foundation in restoring Loko ea, a traditional Hawaiian fishpond on the North Shore of Oʻahu. |
Water quality monitoring |
River Watch is a statewide volunteer water quality-monitoring program operated in partnership between River Science and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) . |
|
Species monitoring |
Log your sightings of California coastal shark species. We are empowering people to photograph and submit sightings of coastal California shark species so that scientists and marine conservation managers can better understand behaviors of coastal shark species and trends in their movements and populations. |
|
(east coast Canada, northeastern United States) |
Biodiversity monitoring |
The first digital platform connecting schools in coastal communities on the east coast of Canada and the Northeast United States to enable students to connect and collaborate on coastal monitoring projects. |
(Alaska, Yukon, and British Columbia) |
Water quality monitoring |
The Indigenous Observation Network (ION) is the largest international, Indigenous initiative combining Indigenous Knowledge and western science to research, sustain and protect the Yukon River Watershed, its resources and cultures. |
Looking to start your own FieldScope project? Projects can be large scale and open to participation across wide geographies and also micro scale and include participation in a small region or area. Find out more about launching a project.
Please note: Not all FieldScope projects are open to public participation from any location. Please check out individual projects to learn more about how to participate.
