Customizing a Time Series Data Display
In this article, the options for creating and customizing a time series data display are explained. For an overview of creating and visualizing and analyzing data in any type of data display in FieldScope, see the Customizing Data Displays article.
A time series display is a line graph that displays numeric values over time from station locations included in a filtered set of data. The options for configuring a time series graph are discussed below.
Once you have selected Time series as the type of data display you want to create, you will see options to (1) use a filter set and (2) configure data. You may use the preconfigured “Recent observations” filter set or you may select a filter set you create. After selecting a Filter set, collection date will automatically be your X-axis. You then have the option to choose values for one or two Y-axes in the configuration dropdown menu.
Option 1
For the second option, select the numeric variable you would like to see displayed in a line graph represented on the Y-axis. The X-axis will always be the observation date.
Option 2
Note that the time series graph works best with data sets that have many observations at the same locations over time. In the graph below, each line represents a different station location. If you click or hover the cursor over the top of a line, it will tell you at which station location that data point was gathered.
Optionally, you can also select a second Y-axis variable. In the graph below, Water temperature is set as the primary Y-axis variable and Salinity as the secondary Y-axis variable. When two Y-axis variables are selected, data from all locations are combined into one line for each variable so you can more easily compare the two variables. Note the color key at the bottom of the graph, indicating which line depicts water temperature and which line depicts salinity.
Before adding the time series data display to your visualization, you can edit the name of your data display by clicking on the edit pencil icon in the upper-left corner of the screen. Once you have configured your time series data display, click on Save.
You will be returned to the main screen of the visualization, where all of the created data displays will appear together.
